Download Gartner Magic Quadrant for Horizontal Portals

Few days back, Gartner released its Magic Quadrant for Horizontal Portals. Here is a quick description of scope of this MQ.

Gartner defines a portal as "a Web software infrastructure that provides interaction with relevant information assets (for example, information/content, applications and business processes), knowledge assets and human assets by select targeted audiences, delivered in a highly personalized manner." Enterprise portals may face different audiences, including:

  • Business-to-employee (B2E)
  • Business-to-consumer (B2C)
  • Business partners (B2B)

Of course, the public-sector corollaries to these three high-level audience types are also considered applicable. A portal product is a packaged software application that is used to create and maintain enterprise portals. These products can be used to design vertical or horizontal portals:

  • Vertical portals focus on accessing specific applications or business functions.
  • Horizontal portals integrate and aggregate information from multiple cross-enterprise applications, as well as specific line-of-business tools and applications.

IT and CIO : Journey and Future from Gartner

As part of its ongoing symposium, Gartner today published its point of view on what future holds for IT organizations and CIO. They have identified following four futures for CIOs.

  • IT as a Global Service Provider
  • IT as the Engine Room
  • IT ‘is’ the Business
  • Everyone’s IT

image

While Gartner sees them as four dominant futures, I see them more as four stages of their journey. My view goes like this:

Recently Microsoft released its Privacy principles based on which it provides privacy protections in software products and Internet services.

  • Quality Assurance steps to ensure that personal information in our records is accurate and relevant to the purposes for which it was collected
  • Access for individuals who want to inquire about and, when appropriate, review and update their personal information in our possession
  • Enhanced Security of personal information to help protect against unauthorized access and use

Loughborough University’s study on ‘Privacy Impact Assessments’ is an important work in this field.

Impact of Cloud on IT

Impact of Cloud on IT

I chanced upon a recent report on ‘Impact of Cloud on IT’ from Freeform Dynamics. Here are few highlights.

  • Cloud is complementary to existing IT infrastructure and service delivery concepts
    • Few are contemplating a wholesale move into the Cloud, with the result that when Cloud is adopted it needs to integrate and interoperate with the existing IT infrastructure.
  • External Cloud services will co-exist with existing third party services in the market
    • Traditional hosting and managed services providers are already starting to work Cloud options into their service portfolios, and the market will increasingly be defined by players who adopt an inclusive approach.
  • Cloud will change the skills required to deliver IT services
    • From an IT skills perspective, this increases the demand for IT professionals that are comfortable working across traditional operational silos and domains of expertise.
  • Cloud may make life easier in some areas, but also creates challenges elsewhere
    • Improvements in provisioning and operating services are countered by the challenges of implementing security and information management across in-house and (often multiple) service provider environments, and making sure the network communications are up to the task.
  • Without integration, Cloud is more plug-and-pray than plug-and-play
    • Once Cloud becomes a core part of the business then architectural challenges arise that need time, planning and investment to solve. This negates the “easy on ramp” advantage claimed for Cloud over traditional IT applications and services, and essentially places Cloud on a level footing with the rest of IT.

  • Emerging Areas: Tracking Sustainability, Government Clouds
  • Future Outlook: Committing to Cloud for the Long Term
